Improving students’ listening and speaking abilities

Based on the strength of Modem Educational Technology Theory, Psychological Cognition Theory, and Second Language Acquisition Theory, our college has established the Experiencing English Center, on basis of local area network. It is supported by relevant learning softwares. Here, the students carry on 120 hours autonomous listening and speaking learning. How the autonomous listening and speaking learning affects the students’ listening and speaking ability? For this reason, we have investigated among 200 students from our college who come from 5 classes in 4 different departments. The investigation centers on the influence of autonomous learning under the network environment on the ability of learners’ listening and speaking and self-study ability. The students who took part in the survey can add the literal explanation under each choice. According to the answers from strong to weak degree, and the summary of the students’ literal explanation. ·

A. Learning of Levels under the network environment help improve the learners’ listening and speaking ability The results show that one of the reasons why the autonomous learning of listening and speaking supported by teaching software plays a positive role among all students is that the hierarchy of teaching design. Different levels contain different content, from shallow to deep, teaching the students in accordance with the students’ aptitude ,which reflects the teaching view of humanism. Under this teaching design, each level of students can learn what they need and realize their goals throgh pratice. Therefore, the central position of the students under the environment of network is established. Rogers divides learning into two categories: cognitive learning and experiencing learning. Experiencing learning, centered on increasing the students’ experience, is a learning process involving learning activities, wishes, interests and needs, which can effectively promote individual’s development. The autonomous learning under the network environment provides students condition and atmosphere for growth. In the process of learning, the students can repeatedly practise listening and speaking so that they can speak out what they want when facing various situations. Therefore, most of the students agree that the autonomous learning under the environment of network have promoted the improvement of their listening and speaking ability. B. Multimedia network environment help improve the learners’ listening and speaking ability The investigation also shows that the students like the multimedia network environment. The revolutionary of modem educational technology in language teaching represented by the computer technology is charaterized by its interaction and integration. The demonstrated function of computer combines words, sound, and images together, which makes the teaching content more vivid and intuitional so that the students can understand and apply the language. Under the multimedia network environment, the students are faced with different kinds of presenting forms of input, so they need different sense organs to receive the learning messages in order to efficiently and meaningfully take part in the activity of knowledge construction. (Shen caifen, 2008: 3, 24-27) Mayer, American educational psychologist (1997), holds that the learning psychological activities under the multimedia nerwork environment are carried mainly through aural and visual channels, which form language psychological model and image psychological model respectively, and then fuse into the system of previous knowledge, fmally produce the psychological cognitive results. C. The alleviation of oral output anxiety under the environment of network help improve the learners’ listening and speaking ability The survey also shows the influence of autonomous learning under the network environment on learners’ affective factors. Krashen holds that, like linguistic, cognitive and social cultural factors, factors also have a profound influence on language learning. But among those factors, anxiety appears in the whole process of language learning, such as the input of language, the processing of language information, the output of language as well as the application of language skills and it can be an obstacle in language learning. In Oxford’s opinion, reasons for anxiety may be the learners’ individual characteristics or the form of learning activities or the teaching methods. For example, the degrees of learners’ self-esteem, tolerance to the blurry phenomena or learning environment, which all are related to the degree of anxiety. But in automous listening and speaking learning under the network environment, the rich forms of network media are helpful to arouse student’s learning enthusiasm. All kinds of language learning under the environment of network will not be interrupted. So the students don’t have too much pressure in listening and speaking practice. The merits that students can studyon hislher own, or arrange their own schedule and repeat the practice in the learning process according to their own plan contribute to lessening their’ learning anxiety, especially debilitating anxiety. Therefore, the relief of anxiety of oral output under the environment of network help improve the learniers’listening and speaking ability.
